Information is a very important element of our time, as well as a precious commodity. The same applies in public transport. Information is an important factor in choosing the means of transport.

Not only internet schedules, but also information direct from traffic improve the comfort of traveling.Requirements on informing passengers are mostly concentrated in two areas. The first is accessibility wherever and whenever. The other area is accuracy, where it does not suffice to have the information from schedule, but it is essential to know the exact time of arrival and departure. For these requirements to be fulfilled, modern technologies supporting the operation of such a system need to be connected to the information system. From the transport provider’s point of view, the ideal information medium is a vehicle having both visual and acoustic information system. Vehicle moves along a designated path where this information needs to be communicated. Automation of the information system in vehicle is supported by GPS system providing distribution of certain information in the right place. EMLINES system includes not only vehicle information system, but also stationary information system. Stationary information system is solved using a set of information boards mounted on individual stops, stations and large transfer junctions. This system provides passengers with real time information about arrivals and departures. Third form of information channel of EMLINES system is information generation, which is accessible for passengers via internet and cell-phone. Individual information media are directed at back-office, from where processed data from individual system components are distributed further. Accuracy of information is ensured by implementation of Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) technology, which displays arrivals and departures of vehicles in real time. Creation of such a system is possible on the condition of transmission of GPS coordinates from vehicle to back-office system where these data are compared to schedule and possible deviations are distributed to the individual information media.
